Letter From Barb Fraze, GSCNC
I think teen girls—as well as staff—might enjoy reading a new book just published by teen Girl Scouts in northern Virginia. “The Glacier Chronicles: Bear Angst, B.O. and Cell Phone Withdrawal,” by POGO Backpackers, is a humorous, sometimes-introspective look at seven girls’ backpack trip in Glacier National Park last summer. The book is based on entries from the girls’ journals. It includes illustrations from their journals as well as photographs taken on the trip. It is a by-girls, for-girls project.
The 32-page full-color paperback sells for $16.99. Proceeds will help fund the girls’ backpacking trip to Scotland this summer. The POGO Backpackers is an interest group of Teen Girl Scouts from Virginia’s Prince William and Faquier counties. Here is the link to the book on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/102-2846352-0441702?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=The+Glacier+Chronicles%22+Bear+Angst%2C+B.O.+and+Cell+Phone+Withdrawal&x=10&y=15

Girl Scout Penpal Network Yahoo! Group The Girl Scout Penpal Network was started as a GSUSA program to provide a way for Girl Scout councils to link troops across the nation. The program is being carried on by Penny Krogstrand in a Yahoo! group. This is a great opportunity for girls to learn about girls from other areas of the country, as well as to practice the lost art of letter-writing. It's very easy to get involved, easy to find links for troops, and safe because all members must be verified Girl Scout Penpal Coordinators.
The name of the group is: Pen Pal Network. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/penpalnetwork/
The purpose of the Pen Pal Network group is two-fold: 1) To more easily maintain a list of coordinators who are willing to use their email to make Girl Scout pen pal links 2) To post link requests and information/questions about the GSUSA Pen Pal Network.
The Pen Pal Network Yahoo! group is a private group. If you search for it at Yahoo! Groups, you will not find it listed. Membership is restricted. New members will not be approved for membership until it can be verified that they are GSUSA Pen Pal Coordinators.
Posts to the group are limited to pen pal requests and pen pal information/question type posts. Replies to pen pal requests should be sent directly to the person who posts the request. Anyone who sends any off topic posts will be moderated and/or banned.
You do not have to be a Yahoo! member to be a member of the penpalnetwork group. However, you will not be able to access the group's pages at Yahoo! unless you have a Yahoo! membership and ID.
You may subscribe to the group in one of three ways: 1) If you have a Yahoo! membership, you may sign on to Yahoo! and join the group from the home page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/penpalnetwork/ 2) If you do not have a Yahoo! membership and prefer not to sign up for one, you may subscribe to the group by sending an email to the following address: penpalnetwork-subscribe@yahoogroups.com 3) By replying to an invitation sent to you by a list owner or moderator. To request an invitation or for more information, contact the list owner at this email address: penpalnetwork-owner@yahoogroups.com

Calling All Advocates! Wanted: Stories of Advocacy from Girls GSUSA wants to hear girls’ stories about how they have been advocates—in any way. We are collecting experiences for a program on girl advocacy for the brand-new Girl Scout Ambassador grade level (grades 11-12).
An advocate is someone who speaks out on behalf of a particular issue, idea, or person. For example:
- a 6th-grader in Minnesota started a petition in her school to ask for a more effective recycling program
- a high school student in New Jersey polled her classmates because she wanted to find out if her concern about toxins in the local river were shared by anyone else so she could join forces for a stronger argument
- a Girl Scout whose troop was collecting toiletries for a women’ shelter took things a step further and met with her state legislator and a corporate executive to ask for funding for domestic violence education
We would love to hear all your girls' stories of being an advocate, whether great or small. Please pass along the following questions to girls in your area to guide them as they write their stories:
1. Have you ever been an advocate? 2. What made you act on someone’s/something’s behalf? 3. What did you learn from being an advocate? 4. Are you more likely to advocate in the future based on your experience?
Girls can send in their stories directly to GSUSA. They must be accompanied by the attached photo release form, filled out by the girl and a parent/guardian.
Please make sure all photo release forms/permission slips include the following info: Full name Age Address Phone E-mail address Photograph info Parental signature/approval
Downloads Photo Release Form
Please ask girls and their parents/leaders to e-mail their story and photo to djohnson@bflogirlscouts.org. Or send the story and photo (we may request a digital one at a later date) to: DaShawn M. Johnson Director of Program Girl Scout Council of Buffalo & Erie County 70 Jewett Parkway Buffalo, New York 14214
