History & Archives
Welcome to the History & Archives Committee Corner!
The Purpose The purpose of the History & Archives Committee is to collect and preserve objects of a historical nature related to Girl Scouting and its members, especially in the area comprising the Buffalo & Erie County Girl Scout Council. The committee also promotes interest in and disseminates information about the history of scouting within our council.
Programs The Committee has held several different programs for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts and for different agencies.
A special History & Archives Patch Program for Brownie level Girl Scouts helps teach young scouts about the history of Girl Scouting. Girls rotate between four activity stations and learn about songs and games; changes in the uniforms; how badges and try-its have changed over time; and spend a little time talking with a Girl Scout member with over 50+ years in Girl Scouting!
Our Victorian Tea has been a popular event where girls get to experience what happens at a Victorian Tea, sampling homemade savories and desserts; making some Victorian crafts, enjoying a fashion show of uniforms, and a special visit by Juliette Low herself!
This committee also provides many opportunities for Girl Scouts in need of Community Service hours. Help is always needed in cataloging archive items, data entry of catalogued items, sorting items, as well as volunteering at our different program events.
Can You Help Us Identify These Photos? As we continue to catalog photos throughout our Council’s 90 years, there are many pictures that cannot be identified. There are photos with no dates, no names, or any description or label as to what event is happening in the picture.
Each month we hope to have a couple of pictures on this page for our visitors to help us identify them. Please take a moment to view these pictures and let the committee know if you recognize the place, a person, or the event so that it may be properly catalogued and maintained.

If you can identify any of the people in this photo, please contact Lois Will, Staff Committee Liaison at 837-6400, ext. 362 or lwill@bflogirlscouts.org.
Needed Items There are three collections in the archives. Whenever possible, three copies of all items are collected. The first collection is the Primary Collection which is not loaned out for any reason. The Secondary Collection may be loaned out for long-term use by other organizations or council staff (for example: a three-month display at the Amherst Museum.) Our Circulating Collection contains items available for daily loans. Listed below are items needed to complete our set of three: • Brownie Owl Leaders Manual – 1920’s • Girl Scout handbooks published in languages other than English.
Interested in Becoming a Member of the History & Archives Committee? The committee is looking for volunteers to sit on the committee and to help with its work. As well as people familiar with Microsoft Excel to enter catalogued items into the archives database. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 10:30–11:30 am at the Girl Scout Service Center.
For more information on the committee, please feel free to call Lois Will, Staff Committee Liaison at 837-6400, ext. 362.
